If you planned to apply for a mortgage with Ally Bank, you need a different route: Ally has stopped originating new home loans, and the practical Ally Bank mortgage discontinued alternative is to compare several other sources before you commit. A mortgage broker, an online retail company, a bank, and a credit union can each fill the gap, and they price and underwrite loans differently. You can compare them without a hard credit pull.
The Mortgage Ally by Duane Buziak is not affiliated with Ally Bank. We are an independent mortgage brokerage, and the similar name is a coincidence that causes real confusion. This guide covers what changed, the four replacement paths, a worked comparison with real math, and a separate program for borrowers that banks often turn away.

What Ally Bank’s Mortgage Exit Means for New Applicants and Existing Customers
To be direct about who we are: The Mortgage Ally by Duane Buziak, through Coast2Coast Mortgage LLC (NMLS #376205), is an independent mortgage broker. We have no ownership, partnership, or referral relationship with Ally Bank. Nothing here is a criticism of Ally. Companies exit product lines for business reasons, and borrowers are the ones left to adjust.
As of October 2026, Ally Bank is no longer originating new mortgages. I am not going to quote an announcement date or the fine print of its wording here, because those details belong to Ally. Ally’s own newsroom and mortgage page are the authoritative sources for the timing and scope of the decision.
New applicants
If you had not started an application, there is nothing to resume. You cannot open a new purchase or refinance file with Ally, so any rate you saw there in the past no longer applies to you. Start fresh with other sources and treat prior research as background only.
Existing customers
If you already hold an Ally mortgage, an exit from new originations is a different matter from what happens to your existing loan. I cannot confirm from here how servicing of existing loans is being handled, or the current status of any Ally home equity product. Call the number on your statement or check your Ally account. Your loan terms (rate, balance, payment) do not change simply because the originator stopped writing new loans, but who services the loan can change, and you should hear that from Ally directly.
If you are an existing customer who wants to refinance or tap equity, you are in the same position as any new applicant: you need a new source, and you may find better terms by comparing several.
Four Replacement Paths: Bank, Online Retail, Credit Union, or Broker
These channels are often lumped together, but the structure behind each one determines how many loan options you see and who sets the price.
- Retail bank: offers its own loan products only. You get that institution’s rates and guidelines, and nothing else.
- Online retail company: same single-source model, delivered through a website or app. Rocket, Movement, Veterans United, and NFM Lending are examples of retail-style options. Veterans United is focused on VA loans. I am naming them factually, not ranking them, and I am not quoting anyone’s advertised rates.
- Credit union: member-owned and often competitive on fees, but you must qualify for membership, and product breadth varies widely.
- Mortgage broker: shops multiple wholesale sources on your behalf. Duane Buziak works this way, comparing hundreds of options at once rather than offering one in-house product line.
Which path keeps what Ally borrowers liked
People who gravitated to Ally typically valued a clean digital experience and straightforward pricing. Online retail companies preserve the digital feel, but you still see only one company’s pricing. A broker preserves the transparency and adds the comparison: you get one point of contact, digital document upload, and several priced options. A soft pull mortgage broker can also show you where you stand before any hard inquiry hits your report.
The mistake to avoid
The most common error is applying to one company, accepting the first Loan Estimate, and never comparing. A single quote tells you the price of that company’s product, not the market. With a $400,000 loan, even a small pricing gap is worth tens of thousands of dollars over the life of the loan, as the example below shows.
As of this writing, Ally Bank is not an option for new applications, so a replacement search should begin with at least three sources, whichever channels you choose.
Replacement Options Side by Side
The comparison below uses only facts about channel type and program breadth. Competitor offerings change, so confirm each company’s current products directly before relying on this. No advertised rates are shown, because a headline rate means little without points, fees, and your own profile.
- The Mortgage Ally by Duane Buziak (independent broker). Products: purchase, refinance, cash-out refinance up to 90% loan-to-value, HELOC, plus non-agency options such as Non-QM. Credit flexibility: wide, because multiple wholesale sources with different guidelines are available, and scoring uses Vantage Score 4.0 for pre-qualification. Pricing: shopped across hundreds of sources at once. Application: digital, with a human broker, available 24/7. Credit check at quote stage: NoTouch Credit Pull, a soft pull with no credit hit.
- Rocket (online retail). Products: broad agency lineup including conventional, FHA, VA, and jumbo. Credit flexibility: set by one company’s guidelines. Pricing: its own rate sheet only. Application: fully online. Credit check at quote stage: ask before you provide your Social Security number, as practices vary.
- Movement (retail). Products: conventional, government-backed, and jumbo programs. Credit flexibility: its own guidelines. Pricing: its own products only. Application: online with loan officer support. Credit check at quote stage: confirm directly.
- Veterans United (retail, VA-focused). Products: centered on VA loans for eligible service members and veterans, with other programs also available. Credit flexibility: tied to VA program rules and its own overlays. Pricing: its own sources only. Application: online with dedicated staff. Credit check at quote stage: confirm directly.
- NFM Lending (retail). Products: a range of agency and government loan programs. Credit flexibility: its own guidelines. Pricing: single company. Application: loan officer led, with digital tools. Credit check at quote stage: confirm directly.
- Ally Bank. No longer originating new mortgages as of October 2026. Verify scope and existing-loan questions with Ally.
The structural difference is the pricing source. The retail options each give you one company’s answer. A broker gives you a field of answers to compare, with a soft credit pull mortgage start so the comparison costs you nothing in score.
Worked Example: Comparing Three Quotes on a $400,000 Purchase
For example, imagine a $400,000 loan on a 30-year fixed mortgage. The rates and points below are hypothetical and are not current market quotes. They exist to show the method.
- Quote A: 6.50%, no points. Principal and interest: about $2,528 per month.
- Quote B: 6.375%, half a point ($2,000). Principal and interest: about $2,495 per month.
- Quote C: 6.25%, one point ($4,000). Principal and interest: about $2,463 per month.
Break-even on points
Divide the cost of the points by the monthly savings. Quote B saves about $33 per month over A, so $2,000 divided by $33 is about 61 months, just over five years. Quote C saves about $65 per month over A, and $4,000 divided by $65 is also about 61 months. If you expect to sell or refinance before roughly year five, the points cost you more than they save. If you plan to stay a decade, they pay off.
What 0.25% does over 30 years
The gap between Quote A and Quote C is about $65 per month. Across 360 payments, that is roughly $23,500 in lower total interest and principal paid, before considering points. Subtract the $4,000 paid for the points, and the net saving at full term is still about $19,500. One quarter of a percent matters, but only if you know what you paid to get it.
Why the Loan Estimate decides
A headline rate omits points, origination charges, and third-party fees. The Loan Estimate is a standardized three-page form, so you can line up two or three side by side. The CFPB explains the format in its Loan Estimate guide, and its broader Owning a Home resources cover rate shopping. Compare the interest rate, the total of the lender credits or points, and the estimated cash to close on page one and page two.
How to Shop Without Damaging Your Credit: Soft Pull vs. Hard Inquiry
A soft pull lets someone view your credit information without it counting as an application for credit, so it does not affect your score. A hard inquiry happens when you formally apply, and it can lower a score slightly. Many borrowers delay comparing offers because they fear a pile of hard inquiries, and that fear is mostly misplaced when you shop correctly.
Duane Buziak uses the NoTouch Credit Pull for pre-qualification. That makes the first step a no credit hit mortgage application: you see realistic options before any hard inquiry is recorded. Hard pulls come later, once you have chosen a direction and move to a full application.
The rate-shopping window
CFPB guidance says that multiple mortgage inquiries made within a short period are generally treated as a single inquiry for scoring. The length of that window depends on the scoring model. FICO’s documentation describes windows from 14 to 45 days, depending on the version, so the safe practice is to complete your comparison inside two weeks. Confirm the details for the scoring model your mortgage uses.
A step-by-step approach
- Gather documents: two years of tax returns or W-2s, recent pay stubs or bank statements, and your ID.
- Request a soft-pull pre-qualification, so your first numbers cost your score nothing.
- Collect Loan Estimates from your finalists and compare them side by side.
- Lock your rate only after you have chosen. A lock secures the price for a set period, so choose the offer first.
Borrowers Banks Often Decline: The Ally Loan Program Through Champions Funding
There is a second name overlap worth clearing up. Champions Funding offers a loan program called Ally. It is a separate product from Ally Bank, and the same non-affiliation point applies: The Mortgage Ally by Duane Buziak has no relationship with Ally Bank, and the Champions program has no link to Ally Bank either.
What the program is
The Ally No-Ratio program is a Non-QM product. Non-QM means the loan does not follow the Qualified Mortgage documentation rules that agency loans use. It is aimed at borrowers who are self-employed, have non-traditional income, or are underbanked, and who may be turned down by a bank applying standard W-2 and tax-return underwriting. The CDFI designation means Champions is a Community Development Financial Institution, a certification from the U.S. Treasury for organizations focused on serving underserved markets.
The key difference from an agency loan is documentation: Non-QM guidelines can look at alternative income evidence rather than traditional tax returns. Specific eligibility, loan limits, and credit and property requirements are set by Champions and can change. Confirm current guidelines with us before assuming you qualify or do not.
A realistic caveat
Duane Buziak originates this program as a Champions-appointed broker. But Non-QM loans typically price higher than agency loans, because investors take on risk that standard underwriting would filter out. If you can qualify for a conventional or FHA loan, compare it first. The Ally program makes the most sense when documentation, not credit quality, is what is keeping you from approval, or when your income is real but does not show well on a tax return.
Replace Ally by Comparing Several Sources
Ally Bank is no longer a route for new mortgages as of October 2026, and the fix is simple: compare several sources before you choose one. A single quote shows one company’s price, while three or four Loan Estimates show the market. Start with a soft pull and you can do all of this without hurting your credit.
